A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
