The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
