A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
