The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
